Butyl Reclaim Rubber

Astra Corporation is a leading manufacturer and exporter of butyl rubber based in India, which produces 600 metric tons of Butyl rubber per month.

Butyl rubber, also known as "butyl", is a synthetic rubber composed of isobutylene and isoprene copolymers. The abbreviation IIR refers to isobutylene isoprene rubber. Polyisobutylene, commonly known as "PIB" or polyisobutene (C4H8)n, is the homopolymer of isobutylene, or 2-methyl-1-propene, that serves as the basis for butyl rubber. Butyl rubber is made by polymerizing about 98% isobutylene and around 2% isoprene. Polyisobutylene is structurally similar to polypropylene, but it has two methyl groups instead of one on every other carbon atom. Polyisobutylene is a colorless or light yellow viscoelastic substance. It is normally odorless and tasteless, though it may emit a faint distinctive odor.

Properties and Characteristics

  • Durability: Butyl reclaim rubber retains butyl rubber's inherent durability and resilience, making it perfect for applications requiring strength and longevity.
  • Flexibility: Its great flexibility allows it to conform to a wide range of shapes while resisting dynamic stresses, making it ideal for seals, gaskets, and other sealing applications.
  • Chemical Resistance: Butyl reclaim rubber is highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals, oils, and solvents, ensuring stability and dependability in harsh environments.
  • Weather Resistance: It maintains its integrity and effectiveness even when subjected to extreme weather, UV radiation, and ozone, making it an excellent choice for outdoor applications.
  • Low Permeability: Butyl reclaimed rubber has low gas and moisture permeability, making it perfect for creating inner tubes, liners, and other inflatable products.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Butyl reclamation rubber is an appealing alternative for budget-conscious industries since it is a low-cost solution that does not compromise quality by reusing recovered components.
